Join the bad hair club babe...you are not alone. "Quarantine Hair" is a real thing and goes just beautifully with your "Quarantine Nails." (Yikes!) But alas, I am your hair fairy and I am here to tell you that there are solutions; reasonable, easy to do, at home solutions that aren't nearly as scary as you've been told. Whether you just need a root touch up, or just some mild highlights, I've researched some great options that won't have you "head"ing for the hill's to hide your bad dye job, or spending obscene amounts of money on corrective color at the nearest salon the second one opens back up.
[For Root Touch Ups]:
Loreal Magic Root Cover Up: $9.99 target.com
This pleasant smelling spray is an instant fix to covering up dark roots or grey. Its lightweight formula is sprayed directly onto the roots, dries in seconds, and washes out with your next shampoo.
The Pros: It's ammonia-free so it won't damage or dry out your hair which is a huge plus! It also comes in a variety of shades so the color selection is vast. It's an insta-fix that works in seconds, so if you unexpectedly run into "hot grocery store guy" while pulling up into the parking lot, you can pull it out of your purse and spray it in for an immediate result. (Whew! Close call, sister!)
The Cons: Some users reported that the product can feel like a hairspray and can leave the hair feeling "tacky". Others said that it can appear yellowish on blonde hair. Additionally, you may need to re-apply it once or twice since it seems to fade a bit throughout the day due to humidity, etc.
Overall: We recommend it, since it's convenient, easy to use and non-committal
Kevin.Murphy Retouch.Me $29 milkandhoney.com
This extremely lightweight, mostly natural root touch up is a spray with a dry, satin, finish. It is a fast and discreet way to color hair and blend roots or greys between color services, and it has a 5-star overall rating from users so that makes us feel confident.
The Pros: This product is a quick, easy to use, solution for root touch up and contains orange and tangerine oil and I don't know about you, but I like smelling like fruit. Users said that it can add some weft to the hair, which I think we all agree is a great thing, and it contains Cationic Polymers which help the pigment to adhere where needed and provides gloss and shine. The best part? It washes out with shampoo.
The Cons: Users claimed that while it does add texture to hair, it can feel somewhat drying. We also found that if you don't shake the container very well before application, the product will be distributed very unevenly. ( Damn Cruella, be careful with that stuff). Also, while we admit it is a great product and definitely stays put for a while, it can feel slightly sticky.
Overall: Totally worth it.
Loreal Paris Magic Root Rescue $5.99 loreal.com
Look girls, it's made by the highly trusted Loreal, so what can we say? This is a very lighweight mixture that takes about 10 minutes and comes with very easy to use instructions and also has GREAT 4 and 5 star reviews from users. And hey "We are Worth It" right?
The pros: The product mixes very easily and comes with a great, easy to use, applicator brush which, if you are anything like me, can save you from a massive hair disaster which as all women know, can incite titanic-like trauma to the female psyche. (Think back to that at- home hair kit you decided to try on your 17-year old self just hours before the senior prom). Those photos last forever. The brush allows the color to spread evenly and the mixture is extremly fool-proof so you don't have to worry too much about getting it wrong and it blends very naturally. Additionally, most of the customer reviews state that the color matches are pretty solid.
The Cons: While we think this is one of the very best options on the market for root touch up in between salon visits, it is a PERMANENT hair color and won't wash out in 5 or 6 washes so if you screw it up (hard to do, but not entirely impossible), you are basically stuck with it for at least 8-12 weeks.
Overall: We love it but excercise caution, and for heaven's sake, read the directions!
[All over color]
Goldwell Soft Color Foam $13.99 beautycarechoices.com
I think this product is one of my favorites because of the ease of use and no long-term commitment. For all you scaredy-cat commitment-phobes afraid to just give in and try something new, this semi-permanent lightweight foam was made for you and, who knows, maybe this product will change your entire outlook on future commitments! (Can hair color even do that?). I say, hell yes.
The Pros: The product is a lightweight foam that has several different options for application. Its description states that it produces, intense, vibrant, results while conditioning the hair. (Honestly, you had me at 'Vibrant'!) It only lasts for 6-8 shampoos so it's not a huge commitment should you hate it. It reaches up to 80% of its intensity after only 5 minutes and delivers great results according to the review of most users.
The Cons: I got the feeling from reading certain reviews that the people reviewing and using it, are professionals who, perhaps, may already work in the industry since they were using non-laymen phrases like, "make sure you clarify your hair prior to using it" (huh?) but this was only from a few people who clearly must be stylists; the majority of everyone else using it absolutely raved about the product. The other small con that doesn't actually seem like a con if you really love the product, is that you have to apply it every 2-3 weeks.
Overall, we recommend it since it's so temporary. Even if you mess it up BADLY it will all be over soon so it's all good lovely! Don't panic!
eSalon $22 esalon.com
Okay, I heard about this option, and if they are a publicly-traded company, I bet their stock value is KILLING it right now. This amazing company customizes an exact shade for you based on a questionnaire you fill out asking everything from what your color goal is: (highlights, all-over color, color and highlights, highlights only, henna, etc.) and narrows it down by finding out everything from your tone, warmth, density, and texture, and customizes it down to the amount of time you would need to process before rinsing and even the way you apply it.
The Pros: It's so customized that it's almost impossible to get the wrong color which is a huge plus. As you all know I am an "Allure Magazine Junkie" basically, so if they love it, I am pretty certain I will too. eSalon is a 5x award winner for a reason: Customers are HIGHLY satisfied with their experiences, so the proof is in the golden, autumn- blonde pudding. eSalon's hair color was voted "best home hair color" by Allure and honestly, that would already be good enough for me, but it doesn't hurt that the actual color quality is excellent and has an overall 5-star rating from users. The best part? They customize a package with your name on it! Not gonna lie, I love anything with MY name on it! (Obvi). And who wouldn't? (Unless of course your name is "Brunhilda" and No offense to anyone named Brunhilda, but, c'mon!).
The Cons: Well, put it this way; there are over 39k reviews on this product and I had to scroll through for a HOT minute to find even ONE review that was less than 5 stars. The one "good" (meaning less than 5 stars) review I did find basically says that the color was wrong, but then she admits that the customer service was so excellent that they reformulated one for her and got it exactly right and she loved it. So basically, there are no cons. I can't believe I am saying that, but I have never seen such great reviews on a product.
Overall, it's a yes for me. Plus, if you look at the photos of the staff of stylists, they are basically all gorgeous and their hair looks amazing so does that make me shallow? Maybe, but don't lie; you love that too. Don't lie.
Clairol Natural Instincts Crema Keratina Haircolor $11.99 clairol.com
Let's face it, Clairol is pretty much known for having great haircolor options. For a Demi-permanent hair color, this product also had high ratings from users and is just another decent option for easy at home application.
The Pros: It gives color a boost in just a short 20 minutes and is ammonia-free and has, oo,ah, say it with me, "Coconut Oil". Which, let's be honest, I might have 99 problems but like pretty sure coconut oil can probably solve 98 of them. Many users said that because of the natural ingredients, it made their hair healthier and softer. The ingredients are mostly natural (80%) and lasts 28 washes so, I mean, it's not exactly going to be a "forever" thing. Sorry babe!
The Cons: I found several bad reviews, like really bad, so it was either a 5 star or 2 and pretty much nothing in between leaving me to believe that someone didn't do their homework on how to color. However, to be fair, I have to report the bad as well so that you are thoroughly informed. (It's our hair dammit! The stuff is on our head where everyone can see it.) Hair is not something we girls take chances with. The bad reviews were all pretty consistent in saying that the color was extremely harsh and one girl claimed that it actually changed the texture of her hair but who knows what other processes she had already on her hair. Another review claimed that it lasted wayyyy longer than 28 washes, but how do we know how often this chick washes her hair? If she does it every 5 days then umm, yeah, probably longer than those who wash their hair every 3 days.
Overall I am on the fence. Cleary, out of all of the products I mentioned, this is the one that I would be the least likely to recommend- but I still think overall that it's a decent product and a few bad reviews aren't going to scare me, but that's just me. You do YOU boo.
These are my top choices based on my research but my overall feeling after doing the research is that there are some really great solutions to your "Quarantine Hair" dilemmas that are actually not that awful: in fact, maybe this situation has a silver lining. We could all actually learn how to do at home color finally. Wishing all of you succesful endeavors in your at home hair color adventures!
